Yum Cha at Tao Tao House

12:50 pm

According to The Age:

Tao Tao House - which loosely translates to ''house of happiness'' - opened three months ago, run by Hong Kong-born father-and-son team Jason and Eric Au. Jason was the head dim sum chef at Flower Drum for nearly 20 years before being headhunted by Doncaster's Golden Dragon Palace

Went with my family to Tao Tao House on 815 Glenferrie Road, Hawthorn after a recommendation from one of my dad's colleagues. Boy was it pretty good. We didn't make a booking when we arrived at around 12pm, the place we reasonably full, but we didn't wait long for a table.

Sui Mai
With all yum cha meals, the standard sui mai is always ordered, it pretty much determines if we'll return to the restaurant again. If the sui mai is too salty or has a poor texture it almost writes off the rest of the restaurant... Unless there's another spectacular dish.

Radish cake

The sweet and sour prawn dish was a little disappointing as it was essentially king prawns covered in sweet and sour sauce. Whilst it was flavoursome, it was not value for money.

*drool* Fried ball of something on the right

Another favourite dish in my family is the chicken legs, some yum cha places will have them very spicy, others almost without chilli. This was adequately balanced with good flavours. I'm drooling again looking at he photos.

Chicken feet

The char siew bao weren't too bad, the bun itself was very light and fluffy and wasn't too sweet. The filling was a good consistency with good flavours.

To my favourite yum cha dessert! The egg tart, the custard was wonderfully creamy and didn't have an overpowering egg flavour. The pastry was lovely and flaky with a good texture. Loved the egg tarts here! The sesame balls with red bean filling were also very good with a good texture to the glutinous shell. The red bean filling inside was not too sweet either.

The pretty looking chrysanthemum flower biscuit was very disappointing, it was fairly hard and a bit dry. The red bean filling too was dry. It was fairly large in size and one alone was a bit too much. Looks very pretty though!
