Whilst Mother's Day was many weeks ago, Mr Curious and I both bought tickets to see Wicked the Musical with our mums. We managed to score some awesome seats in the centre of the dress circle, only thing was it was on a Wednesday matinee. Mr Curious' sister had suggested we go try Krimper, and my was it a great choice. Hidden away down another of Melbourne's secret lane ways, it was almost an adventure finding the entrance to Krimper.
The café itself is in a industrial era warehouse, with bare brick walls, and many of the warehouse features kept in tact to retain that rustic elegance when paired with the modern touches of today. Utilising reclaimed wood features, charming furniture and the restoration of the lift car is the centre piece of the space.
We sat down for an early lunch, and I ordered the Caramelised Pulled Pork burger with apple celeriac slaw, pickles served between a fresh ciabatta bun. I was quite surprised at the flavours of the pulled pork, sweet and smoky with a hint of Asian flavours (reminded me of char siu pork). The pickle was not your strongly pickled variety, instead it was lightly sweet with a balanced sourness to it, a nice palate cleanser between bites of the pulled pork.
The apple celeriac slaw was a definite delight, the finely grated granny smith and celeriac balanced well with the mayonnaise with no flavour out doing each other. The slaw provided a nice balance with the caramelised pulled pork. The bun was a little on the tough/dry side, however it was buttered and grilled on the inside.
Mr Curious ordered the big breakfast with two poached eggs, pork belly, sausage, mushroom, cherry tomatoes served on toasted olive ciabatta. The mushrooms were cooked well, and the cherry tomatoes lightly blistered.
Mr Curious thoroughly enjoy his meal and finished it before I got to try some. It definitely looked good.
My mum ordered the pumpkin soup with ginger from the specials board. She said that it was a little different with the ginger flavours but was nice overall.
Mr Curious' mum ordered the Mushroom scram - mushroom duxel, truffle oil and manchego served on oil ciabatta. The omelette was light and fluffy, with mushrooms throughout with a nice flavour.
If you're looking for a truly Melbournian experience by walking down laneways, and mysterious streets that most people haven't heard of, dining in revamped industrial era warehouses. Then Krimper is the place for you, with a decent selection on the menu, get in early to avoid disappointment.
